LEGGINGS AREN'T PANTS!
I live close to Bloomington, Indiana - a college town. Along with college towns come college girls, and along with college girls come fashion trends en masse. Several times a day, I find myself inwardly screaming, "LEGGINGS AREN'T PANTS!"
Now, lest you think I am out of touch with fashion - I realize the trends. I even follow some of them. In fact, I remember growing up in the 80s-90s, when leggings (or stirrup-pants...YIKES!) were frequently worn under long, tunic-style blouses or sweaters.
Covering the derriere was a must, so the tops ran long. I had a couple of pairs that I wore from time to time, but my personal sentiment on the legging was similar to that of Larry Boy. [Does anyone else recall that Veggie Tales episode when he declared, "And I don't look good in leggings" in the song "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything"?] My personal distaste is due to my incrediblycucumber-shaped thick calves; however, there are many thin-calved young ladies who can pull them off nicely...but I digress. As you all know, leggings have recently come back on the scene - this time in many different forms: jeggings, capri-length, printed, sheer, etc. And girls of all ages are wearing these leggings AS PANTS, often with tops that barely come to the waist, let alone cover the rear.

Note: The point of this post is not to condemn those girls (maybe even you!) who are wearing leggings as pants but rather to give them a "wearer beware"-type notice.
Ladies, you are beautiful! And God made you that way. Isn't that awesome? But I've gotta' say, that I can see WAY too much of that beauty right now...and so can every guy that passes your way.
I'm not going to jump into the entire modesty controversy right now, but I do want to leave you with a thought from the book of Ephesians.
In Ephesians 5, Paul admonishes us to "be imitators of God" (v.1) and to "walk as children of light" (v.8), "not as unwise but as wise" (v.15) but "submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ" (v.21). He then gives specific instructions to husbands and wives about God's divine design for marriage to reflect the relationship between Christ and the church. HEAVY.
We could all spend hours ruminating on this chapter of Scripture, re-chewing and breaking down the information over and over like a cow with its cud. But I am going to focus only on v.3 for today:
"But among you, there must not be EVEN A HINT of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people." (NIV, emphasis mine)
While we can apply this verse to so much in our lives, I want to center in on the focus of this post: LEGGINGS. When we put on tights/leggings that adhere to every curve of our lower body and try to masquerade them as "regular" pants...are we possibly HINTing at sexual immorality? Am I way off-base? How can one know for sure?
Please comment below, and start some discussion. I'd like to know YOUR feelings on this one!

I agree with you and commend you for daring to touch on a subject that frankly has concerned me for a while. How do you broach the topic as a youth leader with lots of youth who don't see anything wrong with it and often wear it to Church? Leggings are NOT pants, and even if you have a fabulous body with all the curves in the "right" places, they are at best a distraction to even the most sanctified male. Why do that to someone if it carries the potential to offend/weaken/tempt? Mind you, some 'brothers' don't mind being offended/weakened/tempted for a little while, but is that really the message we want to send?
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow human I agree that leggings aren't pants that's why I prefer to wear no pants at all
